Online Research Sources - Art and Architectural Design

Search Engine Tools

Rationale: These sites are dedicated primarily to supporting internet-based research in art and architectural design. They are all unrestricted access sites and have some sort of peer review or editorial oversight for managing the data base.

The Getty Research Institute

Endowed by the mammoth J.Paul Getty Trust, the institute endeavors to "promote innovative scholarship in the arts and humanities, to bridge traditional academic boundaries, and to provide a unique environment for research, critical inquiry, and debate" in a worldwide community. The resources for both art and architecture are significant.
A sample search would be to research the Mexican Architecture in their Digital Resources collection.

Great Buildings Online

  • This is one of the best known architecture-based search engines and appropriate for users of all ages. It references e-sources that are available online, and many other resources including books in print, print sources in special collections in libraries, and image and other media sources available. It is interlinked to the Royal Institue of British Architects {RIBA] database site

  • RIBA Architectural Library

    This is the direct link to the RIBA - Royal Institue of British Architects library site, described as the "world's largest architecture library catalog".
    A sample search would be to research the extant print resources for Catalonian architect Antonio Gaudi.

    SPIRO - Visual Images Database

    This database is part of the University of California, Berkeley Architecture Visual Resources Library at the University of California, Berkeley. It links to thumbnails the archived images which the originals are all copyrighted slides at the UC Berkeley AVR Libarary.

    Cities and Buildings

    A smaller database of architectural images at the University of Washington Library Digital Collections. The images are larger than those at SPIRO, but likewise, they are expressly protected by the identified copyright holders.

    ArtCyclopedia

    Their self described goal is to "become the definitive and most effective guide to museum-quality fine art on the Internet". They are primarily a search engine tool referencing museum collections, image archives and other online resources. It is limited to only those artists referenced in museum databases, and may not be the tool of choice for researching relatively unknown, fringe or emerging artists. It also references works of architecture that have been featured in museum exhibits.
